DANCE FLOOR ETIQUETTE & NECESSARY COURTESIES

FLOORCRAFT  -  VERY IMPORTANT TOPIC  - We need to keep our bits & pieces intact.    Good Navigation is vital.     Injuries can take months to repair.

1) As you dance, please be aware of others around you.    The scene shifts constantly and someone who may have   been tucked behind on your right hand side moments before, is more than likely to appear dead ahead and possibly moving in reverse. Stay vigilant!

2) Men, in Ballroom try always to keep progressing with the Line of Dance. There are very few steps designed to retrogress and we don’t teach them if we can help it.

3) Ladies – when you’re stepping forward in Ballroom, watch out for possible obstructions behind your partner and restrain him if necessary.    However careful we are, people will always pop up in places where they’re not expected to be.

4) On a crowded floor in Latin American or Jive, keep your backward steps “tucked under the body”.     It’s far preferable to make accidental contact with the other party via the cushy posterior rather than through the Achilles tendon. In any case, large steps in Latin are unflattering to, and not in keeping with, the dance whatever the circumstances.

5) Try not to loiter in the dance area. Walk around a busy floor rather than across it, giving way to dancers. Imagine it’s the M25 .

PLUS

6) Please be careful about personal hygiene.    Stale underarm odour and smelly breath are ten times more off putting than poor conversation and sub standard dancing!  You don’t have to smell like a rose garden - just be freshly clean.

FINALLY

7) Being friendly and approachable is part of the social dance package.  Please enter into the spirit of the snowballs and mixing dances and try not to refuse an offer to dance.   In these modern times, it’s considered most acceptable for ladies to ask men as well as vice versa, but don’t get into the habit of asking the same person more than once in an evening  – unless you’re going home with them afterwards!

Circulation is the key to a fun evening.
